I am so excited to announce the city of Memphis is taking new safety measures for motocycles, by installing the very first federally-approved "Watch for Motorcycles" warning signs at dangerous intersections for riders. The first sign was installed yesterday at the intersection of Macon road and Collierville Arlington road in Shelby County. Memphis is the 15th city since May to receive the federally-approved signs.
According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), there were 3,363 motorcycle crashes documented in Shelby County between 2003 and 2012, of which, one-third occurred at intersections (1,125 of 3,363). The new warning signs are a part of a nationwide effort to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes involving other vehicles at intersections. The signs are part of the Once is Never Enough (O.N.E.) program – a motorcycle awareness program created by Allstate Insurance that encourages people to look twice for motorcycles. Allstate has been working with DOTs across the country to identify dangerous intersections where the signs should be installed.
