What: Third Annual Junior League of Memphis (JLM) 5K for Kids: Taking Steps to End Childhood Obesity
When: Saturday, May 12 at 9 a.m.
Where: The race begins and ends at the JLM's Community Resource Center (3475 Central Avenue).
Who: The race is family-friendly and open to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness abilities. Strollers are welcome and there will be a fun run for kids as well as a special children's area with games, activities and healthy snacks.
Why: Statistics regarding childhood obesity and inactivity in Tennessee remain high. The state ranks third in the nation for childhood obesity, and it’s estimated that as many as 46 percent of children in Tennessee are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Tennessee is also among the top five states for Type 2 diabetes in children and ranks 48t in the nation for its population’s overall health. The JLM hopes to reverse this trend by shining a light on the issue in our community and by raising funds through events like the 5K to invest in programming that teaches children healthy habits.
