I love chatting with moms and this morning I had the fantastic opportunity to talk on the phone one on one with music super star Justin Bieber's mom: Pattie Mallette. Thanks to all of you who sent in ?'s for me to ask her.
First a little background, Pattie was a single mom living in Canada raising Justin. She shared that she held 2-3 part-time jobs and lived in public housing, so financially life was a struggle. Justin had a musical gift that was recognizable even as early as the age of 2. She said he was drumming and had this incredible ability to keep rhythm. When he was around the age of 13 she posted a video of him on You Tube which went viral and had millions of hits before they even moved to the US. They have been living in the USA now for 3 years. Life has done a complete 180, Justin is a household name and since June this last year he has performed 83 shows. Pattie was there for each show! The movie that is soon to be released, Never Save Never will give fans an opportunity to see Justin up close and in 3D from the very beginning to now!
I asked Pattie if she knew Justin would be discovered and did she expect it this early in his life. She was super humble and replied that there are many talented and gifted kids and she really never expected him to be discovered and have the fame that he has.
I asked her if he had any difficulty with his vocal cords from doing so many concerts and she said yes he did. She shared that on the day of his concerts he tries not to have any dairy and occasionally they have to put him on "vocal rest" and have him not talk the day of a performance which is extremely difficult for the outgoing, social pop star!
I asked her how she handles discipline as with most teenagers you could just ground them from going to a concert, well he is the concert! She shared that she is creative in her discipline and will take away his phone etc.
It was extremely interesting talking with Pattie as her concerns are not any different than any other mom of a teenager, she wants to keep her son safe and happy. Her great advantage is that she is able to go on all his tours with him and maintain a close relationship with him.
She is extremely proud of her son and didn't mind my asking her the most asked question by all you Memphis Mommy readers: Tell me about Justin's hair ;0) We both laughed about the obsession people have over his hair! She shared the same stylist always does his hair, Vanessa and they fly her out where ever they may be on tour every 2 weeks, way to go Vanessa that is pretty cool if you ask me!
And last but not least, mom to mom we talked about her own dreams. As moms we often all struggle to think beyond our kids and think about our own goals and dreams. I asked her what were some of her goals and dreams for her in the next 5-10 years. Given this wonderful platform of Justin's musical talent and fame what are some things she would like to do. She had many ideas of things she would like to consider doing including writing a book to share her own personal story!
